Shopping for any sim racing product can be an expensive past time. Racing wheels, pedals and sim racing cockpits can all cost a lot of money, although there are some great deals and cheaper options.
In this guide, I’m going to show you the best sim racing cockpit deals currently. I’ll also look at how to find the best deals on cockpits and sim rigs, and where to find them.
Do you need a sim racing cockpit?
If you are starting sim racing for the first time, a racing wheel and pedal set are a must. These two items give you the control you need over your car and will start you on your sim racing journey.
Using a table clamp
To begin with, you can choose to mount your racing wheel to your desk or a sturdy table. Some wheels, such as the Logitech G923, come with a mounting system built in. The G923 has two clamps that protrude out the bottom of the wheelbase and are tightened using two knobs on the top. This is a great solution as it allows the G923 to feel sturdy during racing, however, the in-built mount does make the G923 a larger racing wheel.
Other brands get around this issue by including a separate desk clamp. MOZA Racing uses this solution with its budget-friendly MOZA R3 and R5 bundles. The desk clamp is a separate part of the racing wheel and is attached underneath the wheelbase. You then tighten the clamp around your desk or table to secure it. This provides a lot more versatility.
When you compare the size of wheels that use a desk clamp compared to wheels that have one built-in, you’ll see that a seperate desk or table clamp allows for a much smaller racing wheel.
Mounting to a sim rig
A table or desk clamp is a great solution when using a lower powered racing wheel, anything below around 5Nm of peak torque. When you start to use a more powerful racing wheel, a table clamp may not be sturdy-enough to keep your wheel safely mounted.
Measuring a racing wheel’s strength: Peak torque is the measurement for the ultimate strength of your racing wheel. The higher the number, the more powerful your racing wheel’s force feedback is.
In these situations, hard mounting your racing wheel to a sim rig, cockpit or wheel stand will provide a much sturdier mounting connection. Most racing wheels include pre-drilled holes underneath or slots where T-nuts can be used. You can mount a wheel to most sim rigs using these holes and supplied screws.
