Sim Racing Steering Wheel Deals
A sim racing steering wheel is incredibly important. Many racing wheels come with a steering wheel integrated, however some wheel bases allow you to swap out your steering wheel for another using a quick release.
Steering Wheel Deals
Sim racing steering wheels differ from racing wheels in that they are only the steering wheel part of a complete racing wheel setup. A racing wheel includes the wheel base, which is responsible for producing force feedback, while a steering wheel normally only consists of a wheel rim and any electronics such as buttons and encoders.
Some racing wheels, like the Logitech G923 and Thrustmaster T248, don’t allow you to change the wheel rim, meaning you have to use the wheel that is included. However, the best premium racing wheels and wheelbases allow you to change your wheel rim using a quick release.
Can you use multiple sim racing steering wheels?
Most wheelbases will let you attach wheels and wheel rims from the same brand and third-party brands. For example, for a long time, Simucube didn’t produce any wheel rims themselves, only the wheelbases. They relied on third-party brands to produce steering wheels, and Simucube opened up the compatibility of their wheelbases to allow third-party wheel rims to work.
Now that Simucube does produce its steering wheels, you can use any of its steering wheels and continue to use third-party steering wheels with Simucube wheelbase.
Other brands that design and manufacture wheel bases and steering wheels allow third-party wheels to be used with their racing wheels. For example, Fanatec and MOZA Racing produce wheel bases and steering wheels. Yet, you can purchase quick-release adapters and wheel hubs that let you mount other steering wheels. This is great if you want to use a Fanatec Clubsport DD+ with a Cube Controls steering wheel as an example.
Why change steering wheels?
The most common reason for changing your wheel is to increase immersion and control when racing across different disciplines and sim racing titles. You may prefer to race with a formula-style wheel when racing an open-wheeled car like those in F1 games. This increases immersion and can help you better emulate and control your car in-game.
Then, if you wish to race a rally or drift game, you may want to change your physical wheel to a circular wheel rim, allowing you to drift and slide the car more easily. Something that is hard to do with a rectangular formula-style wheel rim.
Changing your physical rim gives you different experiences across different racing disciplines. It also means you can use a single wheel base or racing wheel while changing only the wheel rim or wheel. This can reduce the costs of having to purchase multiple racing wheels and the need to swap out your entire racing wheel base when wanting to race a different game.
